Wonder what it means. Is "Jel" perhaps a reference to some drug popular with fans of angsty post-grunge alt-rock?

Probably not; if the photos in _Lords of Chaos_ are to be taken as an authoritative source, fans of black metal (the genre which superseded death metal) wear their hair long, like some teen fantasy idea of Viking warriors.
