It looks like the Greens didn't win a Victorian Senate seat after all; they came close, but the Democrats held on. Oh well, there's always next election; unless, of course, it was a once-off protest vote and the inner-city trendy-left
chattering classes end up flocking back back to the comfortable, familiar
apron strings of the Democrats.
Hmm. Well, 240000 isn't exactly close. Of course, Victoria doesn't have the number of independents running for the Senate that NSW has, where the Greens picked up a lot of preferences over the Dems, even though the Green primary vote there was 4%. (I was one of those 4% though. Amazed to see my vote made a small difference, at least...)
