Happy International Womyns' Day:
Voters have narrowly defeated a referendum to tighten Ireland's abortion laws, already some of the most restrictive in the world.
The proposal would have closed the loophole allowing women to leave Ireland
for an abortion if they're deemed to be at risk of suicide
(something which came out of a court case involving a 14-year-old rape victim
in 1992).
Though the fact that almost half of the voters suppoted such a mean-spirited
restriction is somewhat alarming. It seems that the Middle Ages aren't quite
over in parts of Ireland.
