Did Osama turn out the lights?

Al-Qaeda claims responsibility for US blackout. A spoof? An attempt to get cheap publicity? Or perhaps al-Qaeda really did do it, with the official version about technical problems (and the official alternative explanation about deregulation and corporate cronyism) being disinformation to keep the public from panicking? The sad thing about these times is it's hard to know who to believe. When OBL and George Bush have similarly low credibility levels, y'know something's wrong with the world.

However, apparently the US' electrical system is pretty bloody dodgy, so I'd guess they didn't need any help from no stinkin' terrorists.

For a moment I parsed that as "the US electoral system is pretty bloody dodgy, so I'd guess they didn't need any help from no stinkin' terrorists"

http://www.reason.com/links/links081503.shtml There has been a remarkable lack of looting or mass panic in the blackout.

Also, if the blackout was widely believed to have been caused by terrorists, it's likely that there would be mass panic.

That's New York though; the local press claims that it has been a continuous Devil's Night in Detroit.
