Electric scooters

This looks pretty nifty. It's an electric scooter (although not one of those little dinky toys, nor one of those daft Segway things that all the geekerati seem to have convinced themselves are the future of transportation). It's virtually noiseless, does up to 30mph (though they're working on faster ones), and it looks pretty sharp too. It costs US$2,800, which is less than the price of a new Vespa here. (via Gizmodo)

Eh, a two-wheeled granny cart. What will they think of next.

Only it's a two-wheeled granny cart that looks slick, goes fast enough to meet residential area speed limits, is much cheaper and smaller than a car and produces no pollution and next to no noise. Surely that's somewhat impressive.

Sure, 30MPH may be a bit slow compared to your standard Holden Commodore, but the 55MPH model is due out next year...

Ahh, I've got one of those, it's called a bike.

That should've been my first comment, I think. I'll shut up now.

Can you sustain a speed of 30mph or whatever it is for any length of time without feeling knackered afterwards? Can you see how the ability to do so might be a good idea?

I can keep up with city traffic at 30kph (about 20mph) with no problems. Mainly because it also keeps me fit, which is another big plus. Fat lardos who live a sedentary lifestyle might need a whizzy doodad, of course.

It's a different matter on the open road, of course.

Probably I'll feel differently about it when I'm 40, but for now, sod anything that needs recharging overnight.

The fitness and enjoyment thing is high on the reasons for my own continued commute riding, not to mention that on a lot of trips, it's actually just as quick as driving.

However, if it could do 50mph i would possibly consider it in the future. I'm certainly not going to by a car that is only going to get more and more expensive to run.
