The Raven's Spiral Guide to Music Theory is, if you'll excuse the daftly new-agey name, pretty comprehensive, going from the usual basics ("this is a scale") to the details (different chord types with descriptions, strategies for chord progressions and melodies, and a treatise on microstructure and macrostructure), illustrated with examples from everything from classical to techno, and throwing out the occasional idea (such as combining counterpoint with the Amen break).

Anyway, the author (someone calling himself "Kurrel the Raven", not to be confused with another electronica artist named Raven) also got some musical fragments, of which he posts one a day. Some of them are quite good, in a shoegazer/krautrock/electronica vein.

Oh yes, and he's one of those furries. Still, he'd hardly be the first talented musician to be somewhat weird. I suppose with goth being mainstream these days and the Church of the SubGenius having more or less petered out, the eccentric people who, 5 years ago, would have been wearing black or praising "Bob", now gravitate to newer weirdo/fringe subcultures.

No. Furries are much, much worse than goths.

Most furries aren't sexual deviants. Much like only a tiny minority of ravers take drugs.

But I get the point about goths. If you're a goth, you can conceivably consider yourself to be cool (all that darkness and brooding angst and so on; it's like being metal, only more subtle and poetic, or some shit like that). However, if you dress up in an animal costume for kicks, two words come to mind: "Subservient Chicken".

Though maybe the furries' time will come; perhaps in a decade or so, fursuits (with or without strategically placed holes) will be appearing in Brunswick St. boutiques and/or Hot Topic shops in the US.

With Strategically Placed Holes, of course?

Dur, should've read that over again. Just got out of bed, still haven't had my coffee...

Funny you should mention that; the algae-like furries have now driven me around the bend with their demands for cuteness and pornography and pictures of girls turning into octopus monsters. My mental faculties are truly limber with fizzling confusion and lust for chocolate milk. Fortunately for you i'm not just another one of those furries as if i were i would likely be content with drawing exquisite anime-styled porn, watching Disney movies with horrible Phil Collins/Elton John soundtracks and having no interest in music whatsoever instead of what i actually do which is drinking whatever brand of absinthe i can afford at the time in steady medicinal quantities, churning out music at a stupendous rate, and writing my wonderful Raven's Spiral Guide.

I do agree that furries are worse than goths and have even dyed my hair black and plan to invest in some eyeliner in order to make the conversion as per the necessary legal requirements in my state.

Cheers for the link, and be informed that Dailies the Fifth

Ahem! Dailies the Fifth will begin in earnest in Chaos 3171 (January '05). If i happen to do dailies earlier than that i shall endeavour to use a decimal point so that all the numbers line up.

In tribute to your generosity and as an easter egg, here is a horrible version of Blue Monday that isn't worth finishing but could be worth listening to: http://www.ravenspiral.com/quickies/krx117-bluemonday.ogg

May your pink bings distance into the fish!

As if a significant fraction of the furry community weren't all gothy anyway. :}

So, just out curiosity, in order to be goth you must brood, and be angsty. I happen to disagree, the biggest problem with people is their lack of understanding of certain sub-cultures. I wear black because I choose too, I listen to the music I do because I refuse to acknowledge the likes of Britney Spears as 'talent'. I have an old taste in music and a liking for industrial and new wave. But, I'm certainly not ashamed of what sub-culture I am a part of. I embrace my beliefs because if you dont believe in who you are, how will anyone else?

Kurrel, your a wonderful guy, and a talented muso. Keep it coming, and good luck with the eyeliner ;)

Figures. Someone mentions what Kurrel does for a hobby as an aside in the article (I.E.: Is partially involved with the fandom) and already, someone tries to apply the actions of the small group of dickweeds in the community who do get kicks from making out in fursuits to the entire community at large...

All of that can be summed up in one word: INTERNET!
