The Null Device

Cringely's paranoid (though not necessarily unjustifiably so) speculations about the FBI's "Carnivore" email tapping system. Not sure whether the FBI shutting down the Internet in this way makes sense, but isn't it reassuring that private concerns can do the same thing as Carnivore is alleged to do merely by renting rack space; think, for example, of all the data harvesters high-end detective agencies have colocated, tracking troublemakers for wealthy clients, or boxes run by the Russian Mafia, designed by ex-KGB crypto wizards... you get the drift.
