The Null Device

Melbourne is hosting a Tibetan Culture Week, with exhibits of Tibetan art and culture; however, many locals who were involved backed out when they discovered that it is a Chinese government propaganda exercise to bolster its human-rights image abroad in the years before the Beijing Olympics. Prominent locals who are still backing the event include Olympic head spiv Kevan Gosper, who supported the Beijing bid, and state premier Steve "Jeff" Bracks, who, having shown himself to be a confirmed believer in the use of force to suppress dissident elements, can undoubtedly see eye to eye with Beijing.
Leaked documents quote Zhao Qizheng, Minister for China's Information Office, as saying: "External publicity on Tibet is an important element of our country's external propaganda. It is also a very important element of our struggle against the Dalai clique and hostile Western forces."

do the Chinese not terrorise the Tibetans? Are there not restrictions on ones human rights in China as there are/were in Afghanastan? doubt we'll see that one happening in GWB's crusuade though.

If anything, China may ask that, in return for having supported the US against its terrorist enemies, the US help its war with its "terrorist" enemies, such as Falun Gong and the Dalai Lama. This could include shutting down Falun Gong web sites in the US or putting pressure on pro-Tibetan activists to keep quiet in the name of patriotism. China may even ask the US to help capture the Dalai Lama (perhaps setting up a sting at a Hollywood function of some sort?), though that's less likely to happen.

The sooner the Dalai Lama takes a proton pill, grows to 100' in size and unleashes his 733+ Wu Shu 5|<177z on the entire People's Army, the better. At least we won't have to put up with Richard Gere's sotto voce whining any more. The same goes for Ann Sang Su Kyi (sp?) and Burma. The sooner she grows seven heads, sprouts scaly wings and eats the entire Myanmar regime, the sooner U2 will stop wearing tshirts with her name on them. Maybe then they will start wearing 'Negativland' shirts. Now *that's* oppression.

Oh oh I forgot to blow rasberries at Mrs Dubya Bush for her new fundraising gesture for the Women of Afghanistan. Has she not heard of RAWA? Did she have carrots in her ears when hubby gave the Talibs $43m LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO? "Sure they're tough on women, but they're tough on drugs too! Here ya go boys!" *cash register noises*

acb, yeah it seems china's taken its cue from the US. in an editorial in china they went off on a suspiciously familiar, "China disagrees with any country or international organization that invites or meets with the Dalai Lama or provides the Dalai Lama venues for separatist political activities." same goes with russia and the chechens i guess.
