Omar Bongo is dead

The world's longest-ruling head of state, Gabon's President Omar Bongo, is dead, after ruling the country for 42 years, i.e., since independence from France.
Other than having had staying power, Omar Bongo seems to have lived up to his bodacious-sounding name, as reported here five years ago.

"Independence from France" ? You must be joking. Gabon, just like most other "former" French colonies, actually remained just that : a French colony, part of a system known as "Françafrique" : http://www.mysinchew.com/node/25645 .

It is to be hoped that the Gabonese people will seize their chance and eventually achieve actual independence from their mentor (please note that this is a Frenchman speaking here).
