It's not the illegal conspiracy that we need to fear but the quite
legal and open consolidation of media ownership and control within the
grasp of a few large, multinational corporations.

There are also legitimate privacy concerns over the growing
capabilities of digital monitoring, though, again, I'm more concerned
about TRW and Equifax building a dossier about my buying habits and
selling it and my personal information to whomever has the right price.

This is actually pretty interesting stuff. If you read the documents
online it looks as if the telcos are working toward this. There
doesn't seem to be any "conspiracy" to suppress this technology or
that anyone is withholding the "truth."

And if you do read it you'll find that the 'civilian authorites'
to which they refer are the civil authorities of other nations. From
the context of the press release, it's pretty clear that when they
refer to 'states' they're referring to other nations, not the States
of the United States. Whether this is a selective quote out of
context or a deliberate misreading of the press release I'm not sure
but the interpretation is just flat wrong.

There are distrubing aspects to the press release, particularly in the
suggestion that the military must be maintained at a level to
"... discourage [Russia and China] from investing the resources to
become future opponents," from which one could infer that continued
Cold War levels of defense expenditures would be in the future. In
addition, the suggestion that the US miltary be interposed "in
troubled [foreign] states and in international operations countering
terrorism and drug trafficking."

Yes, and just up the road from me the Marines at Camp Pendelton are
constantly practicing amphibious landings. So what?

Somehow at the bottom line of this it seems that this is a ploy to
steal subscribers from ISPs...
