I have been following Tomes's theories for awhile now. While it isn't
totally mainstream science, he doesn't count as a crackpot, and his ideas
have a good deal of precedent. He may never find his GUT/TOE but then
niether did Einstein. Also, he seems to be free of the paranoia and
delusions of persecution that seems to come with most crackpots.
 His web page is actually well written, and his assertions seem well
reasoned. He isn't defensive about things when you e-mail him. He catches
 a lot of flak on the .sci groups which he mostly ignores.
