I never thought I'd have much sympathy for the tenets of any so-called
Church of Elvis Presley which wasn't one of those self-consciously
bogus religions I keep hearing about. But: the other day I found, in
a sort of glossy Australian tabloid called "Expose: real-life encounters
with the extraordinary", I found this:
[The Church of Elvis Presley, in Anaheim, California] was founded
by its self-styled "vicar", Katyanna Jantzen. The Rev. Ms. Jantzen
says that after Elvis' (alleged?) death she had a vision in which
her hero appeared to her and told her to spread the word that if
everyone loved each other as much as they loved him, there would
be everlasting peace on Earth. [eXpose, July 1996, p32]
Right away I realized this was the complete reverse of the usual
Christian doctrine: if we all loved each other as much as Jesus loves
us... I don't know whether any sort of love is going to give us peace,
but I was surprised just to find a doctrine that made sense behind
the Church of Elvis.
