Sorry to diverge, but no.  The Coptic St. Anthony (not to be confused with
the Italian St. Anthony of Padua, patron saint of lost stuff), founder of
the monastic tradition, created the Tau cross when preaching to the
Egyptians.  It's an ankh with the loop removed, to show that the cross
wasn't that different from what they already had.  Kind of like St. Patrick
and the shamrock.
