These stories aren't quite paranoid ramblings, but they may well be
urban-legend type exaggerations. A recent article in the Chicago
Tribune covered a meeting at New Trier, where parents, students, and
teachers got together to reflect on the problems that New Trier's
success was causing. According to the article, students commonly take
extra classes during lunch and can be found sleeping in the halls in
the morning after passing out during all-night study sessions--it
also mentioned a number of recent suicides. It didn't say anything
about kids gunning each other down, but New Trier is dysfunctional
enough that stories like these ("I knew one kid who...") could easily
get around.
