Actually, something similar's been done.  A group of academics
infiltrated an "end-of-the-world-the-saucers-are-coming
to-take-us-away group" years ago.  Neither the end of the world
or the saucers turned up, but a rather interesting book
came out of it:  _When Prophecy Fails_.  I recommend it.
